Manchester United have officially confirmed a deal for Uruguayan right back Guillermo Varela to join Bundesliga side Eintract Frankfurt on a season-long loan deal.
The 23-year-old defender joined United in 2013 from Uruguayan side Penarol but has struggled to hold down a first team place at Old Trafford.
He has made 11 appearances for United and has also spent a year on loan with Real Madrid’s Castilla team.
He was highly regarded by United fans as an exciting young full back, however he has not pushed on under Louis Van Gaal and fell out of favour with Matteo Darmian and Antonio Valencia preferred as right-back options.
The Uruguayan had also been known for his attacking instinct as a full back but his defensive frailities were recognized in Van Gaal’s last season at Old Trafford, most noticeably in the Europa League tie against Liverpool where he was at fault for Phillipe Coutinho’s solo goal.
It now remains unclear at Varela’s age whether he still has a future at Old Trafford, however Frankfurt may offer him the first-team football he requires.
Varela was involved in Mourinho’s first pre-season friendly away to Wigan, however did not travel to China on United’s tour as the deal was finalised.
Guillermo Varela and Tyler Blackett are set to be sold by Manchester United after Jose Mourinho deemed them surplus to requirements according to reports from Sky Sports.
Neither Varela or Blackett, are currently training with United’s first team squad, an indication that they will play no part in Mourinho’s plans for the future.
However Sky Sports go on to report that Mourinho remains keen to promote young players from the club’s academy and has identified central defender Axel Tuanzebe and full-back Timothy Fosu-Mensah as stronger options to be involved with the first team.
Both will be given first team opportunities by Mourinho this season, with the Portuguese said to be confident on the pair fulfilling their potential at the club.
Fosu-Mensah broke through to the first team ranks last season, making 10 appearances for the senior side, featuring in wins against the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City.
He can operate across the back four, as well as a defensive midfielder. It is believed Mourinho intends to focus his development as a right back.
Tuanzebe was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, but grew up in Rochdale. He has been identified by United coaches as a leader, having already captained the Under-18 team as a first year scholar.
He has also been a key player for United’s U-21 side, although is yet to make his first full team debut, that opportunity could come under Mourinho.
