Tahith Chong Debut Against Huddersfield?

Tahith Chong, a name Manchester United fans may not have heard of a few months ago, is suddenly the man, or boy, many fans want to be the next youth player given a run out for the first team. With Huddersfield up next in the cup, is it the perfect time for Chong to be given his chance?

For someone so young – Chong only turned 18 in December – Tahith Chong is already making up for lost time. A serious knee injury kept him out for most of 2017 so it’s credit to him and his talent that we’re only two months in to 2018 and he’s already banging on the door of the first team.

Fast, skillful and a competent finisher, Chong has the look of accomplished United wingers from years gone by. Ryan Giggs is an obvious comparison and Chong does possess that ability to glide along with the ball at speed and beat a man. But for anyone who’s seen Chong and old clips of George Best in his younger days there’s definitely a resemblance in the way Chong keeps the ball close, can ride a tackle, and never looks in any trouble despite the number of players around him.

Of course comparing an 18 year old youth player to one of the world’s “Best” ever players is at this stage fanciful. Chong’s first challenge is to force his way in to Jose Mourinho’s plans before he can even begin to think about how good he can be.

So how close to a first team call up is Chong and is he likely to be involved against Huddersfield?

In answer to the first question, he should be very close. He’s recently featured and performed well for the U23’s, which is effectively the reserves, and with Mourinho monitoring those performances a first team call up should be imminent. However, I’d be very surprised if Mourinho calls him up any time soon. Mourinho isn’t Sir Alex Ferguson. If he was then Chong would be involved against Huddersfield. Sir Alex was never shy in promoting youth, especially young talented flair players, and Chong fits that particular statement like a glove.

Mourinho is different though. His record with bringing through youth, despite his protestations, isn’t good. He’s also already stated that he wants to bring through one youth player a season and this season it’s McTominay. Others have been given a few minutes here and there but Mourinho doesn’t appear to be the sort of manager that would consider Chong’s involvement any time in the next month or so a priority.

The more realistic hope for Chong is that the first team find some sort of consistent form between now and April and tie up Champions League football so that Mourinho has the option of blooding some youth in the remaining dead rubber league games. But with the way United are playing at the moment it could be be that every game counts between now and the end of the season. Which is likely to mean no debut for Chong any time soon.

Youth watch: Tahith Chong

1st Year scholar Tahith Chong will be one to watch for me. We beat a host of football clubs for this boys signature so after a successful personal campaign with the Netherland’s I’d like to take a little peek at the boy from willemstad, Curacao.

His national side saw them reach the quarter finals, a 62nd minute winner against the swedes in the bakcell arena, Azerbaijan was a personnel high.

He took part in 354 minutes of game time in Azerbaijan, only missing 46 mins of the tournament, all late substitutions! Clearly stating his importance to the Dutch. The last time we bought a player from the Eredivisie we bagged Timothy Fosu-Mensah so here we take a little look at our new Dutch star in the making.

Born: Dec 4, 1999

Age: 16

Nationality: Netherlands

Ethnicity: Netherlands/Curacao

Position: Striker – Wing

Junior Team: Feyenoord  (2009-2016)

Current Team: Manchester United

Hailing from the same academy as Robin Van Persie, Manchester United 1st summer signing was a little lower key than Ibrahimović and Pogba. He came from a tiny Dutch island, not far from Aruba and Venezuela, eventually earning himself a 5 year stint with Feyenoord.

Tahith Chong has made the move to Manchester, where and don’t hold me to it, although I suspect you will, this kid has what it takes to go very far in the game.

There is already an arrogance that you need if you’re to make it to the top of this game and I feel that he has it in spades, gliding past opponents with ease, a sublime left foot, an eye for goal or pass and the ability to run at speed, leaving his opponents with nightmares.

I’d be surprised if you didn’t feel the relief of all Dutch youth managers when he signed for us as, they will have a much easier season ahead.

Manchester United has once again seemingly unearthed a genuine future product, one I am really looking forward to us developing. There are a few new scholar signings this Year, however I feel this is the pick of the bunch for me and I am very much looking forward to seeing him in united colours.

With the arrival of Zlatan Ibrahimović, a certain world record transfer and the youth we already have you would be forgiven for not sitting up and taking notice of this signing.

The future looks bright, the future looks red!

Chong set to sign for United

With the 2015/16 season drawing ever closer to its conclusion we can expect to see a sudden rise in transfer rumours once again. And the subject of this particular transfer rumour is Feyenoord wonderkid Tahith Chong.

It has been reported by the Daily Mail that talks are at an advanced stage and a deal is expected to be completed for the 16 year old in the coming days.

United are said to have seen off competition from other Premier League clubs such as Arsenal and Chelsea for Chong’s signature.

Feyenoord did try their best to keep hold of the youngster but the emergence of United’s youth players such as Marcus Rashford, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson appears to have given some encouragement to Chong.

Tahith Chong’s favoured position is on the left wing where he plays most of his football, but he can also play anywhere across the attacking front line, making him the type of versatile player Louis Van Gaal prefers.

As there has been no word about this transfer from either club, we should take this rumour lightly as we have seen reports like this on many occasions and nothing has come of it, leaving us all bitterly disappointed!
