Manchester United have joined rivals Manchester City and Chelsea in the race to sign Roma centre back Kostas Manolas, according to the Daily Mail.
Roma signed the 24 year old Greece international from Olympiacos in 2014 for £12million.
Manolas played for Olympiacos when they beat Manchester United 2-0 in the UEFA Champions League when David Moyes was in charge.
Jose Mourinho was interested in signing Manolas when he was in charge of Chelsea but a move failed to materialise.
United have been looking for a defensive leader since the departure of Nemanja Vidic and last summer failed in their attempts to sign Sergio Ramos from Real Madrid.
Despite United’s stuttering form this season and a bewildering lack of goals, the partnership between Chris Smalling and Daley Blind has been exceptional, helping United to the 2nd best defensive record in the Premier League with only Spurs conceding fewer goals.
As I’m sure many other United fans will agree, a defensive leader is definitely needed. I’m not saying Kostas Manolas is our man because I know very little about him. But I do believe we would benefit from signing a top centre back not just to strengthen our back four, but also because we would be better off using Daley Blind in his favoured position as a central defensive midfielder. Especially with Michael Carrick’s future in doubt.
Daley Blind has similar attributes to Michael Carrick, possessing a fantastic passing range and instinctive defensive qualities. I think he would make the perfect replacement. Carrick has had a fantastic career at United but has struggled for consistency as of late.
