Benfica midfielder Renato Sanches is set to sign for Manchester United in a 35 million pound deal
Sanches is a player United have been linked with for some time and with rumours circulating in the January transfer window that a deal was close, it appears United finally have their man.
The truth is United have been scouting Sanches for most of the season, again evidencing Van Gaal’s intent to bring in the best youth talent in the world. And Renato Sanches certainly fits in to that category. His rise this season has been nothing short of sensational.
Turning 18 back in August Sanches made his debut last October, after a string of poor results for Benfica, and the impact was immediate. The improvement in Benfica’s fortunes since Sanches’s introduction to the first team have been plain for all to see, with team performances electrifying the Estadio De Luz and a winning streak that has put them in pole position for the title. Renato Sanches is widely credited amongst supporters and the media as the reason for Benfica’s improvement, which is probably why the club offered him a new contract back in November with a 35 million buyout clause.
So how does he play? A box to box midfielder in the traditional sense of the word, Sanches is quick, athletic with a ferocious shot. Everything points to his game being tailor made for the premier league and he very much fits in to that Fosu-Mensah, Rashford, Martial category of being confident, talented and ready to play way beyond their years.
35 million is a big outlay for an 18 year old with less than a season of first team football behind him but the feeling is this will be money very well spent by the Manchester United hierarchy.
The rumored move will do nothing to quell the Jose Mourinho to United talk either. Mourinho is a long time admirer of Sanches and is said to have been eyeing him up for Chelsea before his dismissal. Renato Sanches is also a client of Jorge Mendes, Mourinho’s agent. Coincidence or yet another sign that this is going to be a very exciting summer of Manchester United fans?
