Manchester United officials are currently looking at plans for an extension to Old Trafford, which would see an extra tier added to the Sir Bobby Charlton stand, making the Theatre of Dreams’ capacity 88,000, according to a report on the Daily Mail.
The Red Devils currently have a capacity of 75,643, but should the plans go ahead then they will boast the third largest stadium in Europe, behind Barcelona’s Nou Camp and Wembley stadium.
Previously, United have been reluctant to look at plans for expanding the stadium because of concerns regarding the train line, which is directly behind the stand.
However, due to advancements in technology, the club can now look at extension plans without fear of causing disruption to houses or the railway line.
Should the plans be given the green light, Old Trafford will surpass the San Siro, Bernabeu, Stade de France and Westfalenstadion in Europe in terms of maximum capacity.
Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is prepared to trigger Sergi Roberto’s £36.5m release clause in his contract after the defender was angry at not starting the Spanish Super Cup first leg against rivals Real Madrid, according to a report on the Mirror.
The right back, who can also operate as a central midfielder, was upset at being left out of the starting XI and has made up his mind to leave the Spanish giants. The 25-year-old has attracted interest from United and fellow Premier League club Chelsea and it seems both clubs will battle for his signature.
The Red Devils are looking to bring in at least one more player before the transfer window slams shut and Mourinho is looking to provide some cover for Antonio Valencia. Roberto can also play in midfield and with United playing in numerous competitions, squad rotation will be key to challenge for silverware.
The defender may decide to stay in Spain if he gets the assurance that he will be a starter for Barcelona but if not, then he is open to a move to the Premier League.
In my opinion, Roberto would also not be a starting player every week at Old Trafford, however he will get plenty of games due to United having a very busy fixture schedule. Antonio Valencia is very fit and healthy but he won’t be able to play every weekend and midweek, which is why signing Roberto will provide some top quality cover in that position.
Our midfield is really strong but Mourinho can’t always use the same 3 men in midfield in all competitions so Roberto would fit in nicely there too but if he is leaving Barcelona to get first team action week in week out, then I don’t think United is the best place for him.
What do you think? Should United sign Roberto?

Angel Gomes was signed by United at the age of just 13 and after consistently playing in higher age groups, he finally made his debut in the Under-18’s at the age of 14.
Despite being creative and very skilful, there are concerns about his size and whether or not he would survive in the Premier League.
Although the 16 year old is contracted until 2018, his remarkable performances for both club and country have raised the eyebrows of Barcelona officials who are monitoring his development and may well attempt to lure Angel Gomes away.
With the announcement that Jose Mourinho is Manchester United’s new manager, Mata’s future at the club is in question.
In Jose Mourinho’s time at Stamford Bridge, he decided to allow Juan Mata to go to Old Trafford at ease which sparks the question whether he’ll let go of the Spaniard as easily this time round.
Barcelona, the La Liga giants, have been heavily linked with Mata for some time now and as he’ll now be under Mourinho’s United, that might tempt the 28-year-old to make the move.
Mundo Deportivo have reported that Barcelona are looking to strengthen their squad this season to try and gain European victory in the Champions League next season.
The Nou Camp already boasts impressive talent under the likes of world class stars Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Neymar.
Juan Mata has impressive stats himself which have impressed Barcelona such as his 89% pass accuracy and his FA Cup final goal really put him into their high priority of summer transfer targets.
Unfortunately, he wasn’t included in the Euro 2016 squad for Spain so is desperate to get back to winning ways which the move to Spain could offer him.
History may repeat itself again as Sportsmail has reported that his advisors are set to discuss Mata’s future at United with Mourinho to make sure he still has an active role – this is the same action that took place two years ago before Mata was sold to Manchester United.
The £37.1 million transfer from Chelsea is desperate to stay at the club and has shown this with his passionate display at Wembley in the FA Cup final.
Mata is currently in Catalonia, fuelling the rumours that he is considering the move back to Spain.
As Mata is back under Mourinho’s wing, could history repeat itself? Will he make the move to the Spanish giants? Do you want him to stay at the club?

Manchester United, Real Madrid and Paris St Germain all monitoring Neymar’s situation at Barcelona.
As with many other transfer rumours, this one does sound a little far fetched. However, there are concerns that Barcelona will not be able to match Neymar’s wage demands.
There will be nothing Barcelona can do to stop Neymar leaving should his wage demands not be met and a club come in and trigger his £134m release clause. We all know Manchester United can afford it.
In slight contrast, United are also interested in signing Bournemouth’s Matt Ritchie. The winger scored 15 last season and helped with 17 assists. He also scored a wonder goal against Sunderland this season.
