Pogba strikes late as United march on!

The world’s most expensive player Paul Pogba scored the winner as Manchester United completed a stunning comeback to give them their fifth consecutive victory and preserve their unbeaten run since October.

Middlesbrough took the surprise lead in the 67th minute through Grant Leadbitter whose right footed strike left Old Trafford stunned.

United struck back in the 85th minute through Frenchman Anthony Martial which lifted the spirits of the crowd as the Red Devils went in search for another goal.

The winner came 86 seconds later through the head of Pogba, who powerfully planted his header into the top corner to score his sixth goal of the season to send Old Trafford wild.

The manner of the victory came on the perfect day for United – the birthday of ex-manager Sir Alex Ferguson, who during his hugely successful time as manager mastered the art of the comeback.

United dominated the entire game and were extremely unlucky to not score earlier having had 32 attempts on goal. Pogba and Martial struck the woodwork and Zlatan Ibrahimovic having a goal harshly disallowed for a high boot in the first half.

Ex United Goalkeeper Victor Valdez was also in good form, saving smartly from Ibrahimovic from close range. It looked like one of them days where the ball would not go in the net for United, whose performance was worthy of the victory.

The win takes United one point away from the top four, extending their unbeaten run in the Premier League to ten games as they intensify their push for a champions league position.

For us United fans the game was hugely frustrating and it seemed like the Burnley match all over again as chance after chance came and went. But United dug deep and ground out the victory, which shows the progression the side has made in the past few months.

A few months ago, as seen against Burnley, we couldn’t make the breakthrough, but today we showed our fighting spirit and signs that the United of old was being revived through a pulsating comeback in the final five minutes.

Jose Mourinho also proved his worth through the introduction of teenager Marcus Ashford, who immediately changed the game and gave United more threat in attack. The win was a huge relief for United, who continue their fine run of form.

Michael Carrick must start!

United great Michael Carrick has to start more games for United. His calming influence alone is an obvious asset to the team.

The holding midfielder is approaching the end of his career at the age of 35. Hence, United have to make use of his abilities quickly. His eye for a forward pass is something which United have been lacking in the early stages of the season.

He is hugely influential for the team, with United winning every game in which he has played. Whenever he plays, he dictates the pace of the game. He is also equipped with the experience to know when to quicken the speed of play, or when to slow it down.

Additionally, the best aspect about Carrick’s play is that he hardly gives the ball away. His passing is highly accurate, with 96.8% of his passes finding a teammate.

It is also no coincidence that Paul Pogba had his best game in a United shirt against Swansea when Carrick played behind him. He gives Pogba an element of freedom to roam between the lines of midfield and attack, and he thrived in that position in the convincing victory over Swansea.

One thing is for sure, the England national team has missed out hugely on the talents of Carrick, now lets not make the same mistake.

United chase Luciano Vietto

Manchester United are reportedly interested in capturing the services of Atletico Madrid’s 22-year old Argentinian striker Luciano Vietto, who is out-of-favour at the Los Rojiblancos.

Vietto is a relatively new figure at the Vicente Calderon, after only signing for the Madrid-based club last summer from Villareal for £15.5 million. However, the youngster found it difficult to break into the starting line-up and couldn’t replicate the tremendous form which he showed in the yellow of Villareal.

His lack of game time under Diego Simeone meant he only scored a meagre 3 goals in 12 appearances throughout the campaign.

The tricky striker, whose close control and dribbling are frightening to defenders, is set to move from the Spanish capital in the summer after Atletico bolstered their attacking options through the signature of Nicolas Gaitan, and United are reported to be keen on securing him as their second major summer signing.

Vietto said:

“We will see where I play after the summer break is over.”

And are claiming that United are fighting for his signature with a number of Premier League clubs, especially Arsenal.

What will Vietto bring to United?

The Argentinian youngster, whose preferred foot is right, will bring attacking flair to United, as he has been attributed to making cunning runs in-behind defenders, and loves to stay on the shoulder of the last-man.

However, he has an air of unpredictability about his play, as he has brilliant link-up play with his back to goal, meaning he can lay the ball off to on-rushing midfielders, which would be perfect for the likes of Wayne Rooney.

Luciano will also bring a positive attitude to Old Trafford, as Simeone has previously praised his willingness to work hard in training and pointed out the positive effect that his presence has on the pitch.

Additonally, this signing will give United a range of options in attack, and new manager Jose Mourinho will need squad depth to bring more major silverware to the Theatre Of Dreams!

Rojo leaves his Marc in Copa America

Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo has been putting in some brilliant performances for Argentina in the Copa America in the past couple of weeks.

The 26 year old Argentinian holds a regular starting position for his country. However, he had a league campaign with United which was riddled with injuries and poor performances, but has shown top form and increasing levels of confidence for Argentina in the Copa America. The former centre-back now operates as a full-time left back for club and country, and is showing signs that he is fitting into that position perfectly.

He has been showing adventurous attacking play on the left flank, with his deliveries into the box increasing in quality. Rojo had an incredible game against Panama by bagging himself two assists and playing the full 90 minutes. Mesut Ozil watch your back, Marcos is challenging for the ‘Assist King’ title!

Rojo has developed into an integral part of the Argentinian squad, as he has also played every minute of Argentina’s Copa America campaign so far. Additionally, he shows brilliant organisation and communication in the Argentinian defense.

How does Rojo’s form impact United?

This is also good news for United, as consequently, there will be competition for the left-back position between Rojo, 19 year old Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Luke Shaw, whose comeback from injury is seemingly imminent.

However, staying injury-free is a major target, as he has been plagued with minor knocks for the past season, which has negatively affected his development as a Manchester United player. The fact that we’ll have three potential left backs next season is wonderful, as a depth of options in the squad is required if we are to challenge for major silverware next season.

The question is why can’t Rojo replicate his international form for United? It could be due to a lack of confidence, fear or even laziness. Whatever it is, it needs to be sorted out quickly because at his best, Marcos Rojo can be influential for Manchester United.
